New, highly-detailed, geophysical measurements and models in the western United States provide insights into long-standing problems of the geological structure and history of this complex and active region.

The goal of this web site is

Results of several high-quality investigations of the western US are available online, and with the right software you can make detailed displays. High resolution 3D data requires multiple high-detail 2D and 3D depictions, combined with human vision, perception, and judgement, to see all the structure and meaning in the data. Figures in publications present conclusions but do not generally allow complete views of results, nor careful comparisons between results of different studies.

Interactive 3D visualization is the best way to present such data for analysis. Simultaneous display of two or more data sets in one interactive display is by far the best way to compare data sets, and to find consistent geophysical structures and processes. Many of the data displays here are made with the Interactive Data Viewer (IDV).

While geophysical research is often focused on small areas and highly specified problems to answer particular questions, the intent here is to show, discuss, and establish what is known now about the big picture of geophysics in the western US. Progress is made by careful studies of particular problems; but documenting overall achievements is valuable too. A great deal has been achieved and this accomplishment is worth describing in detail.

Contributions of other interpretations, new data displays, and new data to display are welcome. Send email to the address below. Please include your name and position.
